Durga is a warrior goddess with many arms. In South Asian iconography, each of her hands bears a weapon – a mace, an ax, a spear, a sword, a crossbow. The multiplicity of weapons makes her versatile so that she can defeat any enemy. And although she is a fierce warrior, Durga is also the embodiment of the ultimate creative force, the Mother.

I relate to Durga’s passionate engagement with life. I identify with her as a protectress. In particular, I am committed to fighting injustice, and this calls for both fierceness and versatility.

My choice to have my arm as the focal point for the photograph was in honor of Durga and in acknowledgement of her energy.
